Airlocks are special chambers. They allow or prevent personnel from entering areas of a certain cleanliness class. Cleanrooms are sealed against contamination by bacteria or other contaminants.
If production requires personnel to move from a contaminated area to a clean one, airlocks act as a purifying agent for those entering the clean zone. Streams of purified air can prevent human-borne dust from entering the clean zone.
